The Team

The Finance Department is a crucial part of the success of any company. As such the CFO will work together with our Controller to assure all documents and data are accurate, complete and on time to meet reporting deadlines, corporate meetings, and any outside organizational requirements. 

 

The Role - Duties and Essential Job Functions

To be successful, the Chief Financial Officer will be responsible for the following:

Planning

  • Assist in formulating the company's future financial direction and supporting tactical initiatives
  • Substantial financial modeling
  • Monitor and direct the implementation of strategic business plans
  • Develop financial strategies
  • Analyze and develop strategies for corporate tax and R&D credits
  • Manage the capital request and budgeting processes
  • Develop performance measures that support the company's strategic direction 

Operations

  • Act as an Officer of the Company
  • Participate in key decisions as a member of the executive management team
  • Maintain in-depth relations with all members of the management team
  • Oversee the financial operations of subsidiary companies and any foreign accounting operations
  • Manage any third parties to which accounting or finance functions have been outsourced, legal, tax etc.
  • Oversee the company's transaction processing systems
  • Implement operational best practices, modify or design accounting processes, procedures, and controls as needed
  • Work with HR department in regards to employee benefit plans, including 401K, with particular emphasis on maximizing a cost-effective benefits package 

Financial Information

  • Certify company financial statements.  Owns and is accountable and responsible for corporate-wide financial reporting for StemExpress and all subsidiaries, which include StemExpress Foundation, and real estate holding company:

Cash Management / Treasury Functions

Budget Definition and Monitoring

Invoicing

Accounts Payable

Payroll

Timekeeping and Expense Reporting

Signing of Checks

Compliancy Reporting to Government Agencies

Risk Management

  • Understand and mitigate key elements of the company's risk profile
  • Review contractual agreements for potential gains and risks
  • Monitor all open legal issues involving the company, and legal issues affecting the industry
  • Maintain appropriate insurance coverage
  • Ensure that record keeping meets the requirements of auditors and government agencies, and practice in accordance with GAP.
  • Oversee external auditors and report risk issues to the CEO or internal audit committee
  • Maintain relations with external auditors, investigate their findings/recommendations

Funding

  • Corporate contract negotiations
  • Lending and financial contract negotiations
  • Assess when financing is needed to keep up with the company's fast pace growth, future strategy, pivots, and changes.  
  • Monitor cash balances and cash forecasts
  • Preference for raising debt and only equity financing if needed
  • Invest funds as necessary

Third Parties

  • Participate in conference calls with the investment community
  • Maintain banking relationships
  • Represent the company with investment bankers and investors
  • Supervise acquisition and strategic partner's due diligence and work with executive team to negotiate agreements
  • Support the CEO in formulating an externally Board of Advisors that meets regularly
  • Support annual audit requirements
  • Participate in annual strategic planning efforts with peers.
  • Work hand-in-hand with peers responsible for corporate profitability.
  • Act as a role model and representative of StemExpress leadership.

 

Reporting Relationships

This position will report to the Chief Executive Officer and have oversight for Finance personnel. 

 

Preferred Qualifications

The CFO should have a master's degree in accounting or business administration, or equivalent business experience and 12+ years of progressively responsible roles and responsibilities. Should have experience in partnering with an executive team, and have a high level of written and oral communication skills. Preference will be given to candidates with the Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designations.
